“We’ve packed in a lot in the past week and a half, so we’ll try and update you…

On Wednesday 10th November we had another of those somewhat surreal days where we felt like we’d gone to another world. We left our campsite on the Merced River, up in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, early on a cold drizzly morning and arrived at the Pacific Ocean about 4 hours later in brilliant sunshine. We camped at Wright’s Beach, in the Sonoma Coast State Park. At $35 a night it was expensive, but worth it for the location – we could see the waves crashing on the beach from our tent! They’d had a storm the day before, so the surf was massive. The coastline there is beautiful – rocky cliffs, with beautiful sweeping sandy beaches. It reminded us both of the Gower Peninsula, apart from the abundance of palm trees and lack of Welsh sheep and cows! In fact, there is a colony of harbor seals living at the mouth of the nearby Russian River. We walked along the beach and got close enough to see them, but being a mottled brown colour, they didn’t photograph very well. And they obviously don’t like paparazzi because they got restless and moved away when we got too close.

The next day we drove down to Fairfax, just north of San Francisco, to stay with John and Laurie for a few days. They’re the couple that we stalked around Kalymnos back in June – little did they know at the time how far our stalking would go! (We all found it very amusing how many people think that John and Darrell must be brothers. They do have a certain resemblance to each other…is there something that their parents haven’t told them?) We had an absolutely fantastic long weekend with them, starting with them taking us out for a wonderful meal in San Francisco at a restaurant where the wine waiter tells you the personal history of the Sicilian family who crushed the grapes in your wine.

John writes the software for the special effects in George Lucas films, and on Friday he gave us a personal guided tour of the Big Rock Ranch where it all happens, then took us for lunch in the Skywalker Ranch where George himself works. It was amazing – loads of Star Wars memorabilia, but also old film posters and original artwork everywhere. The architecture and landscaping were beautiful, but we weren’t allowed to photograph anything inside, so we settled for a picture of Amanda posing next to Yoda.

In the afternoon, we went for a walk along the Marin County coastline and couldn’t get over the fact that despite the fact that it was November 12th, we were too hot in long sleeved tops and jeans! In fact, the weather all weekend was in the mid 70s (about 24 degrees C) and sunny – everyone said that the temperature was warmer than usual for the time of year, but that the sunshine was normal…it’s definitely not Buxton! That evening, we met up with Laurie and John in their very friendly local pub, the Iron Springs Brewery. It reminded us of the bar in ‘Cheers’ because everybody seemed to know everybody else, and we soon knew half of them as well.

On Saturday, we all went into San Francisco on the ferry to do the touristy sightseeing thing. It was great! From the boat we saw San Quentin, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. Once on land again, we climbed what felt like a million steps to Coit Tower for a view over the city, we walked up and down lots of VERY steep streets, we ate lunch in China Town, we rode on a cable car and a trolley bus. SF doesn’t disappoint – it’s just as lively, cosmopolitan and scenic as it looks on TV and in films.

This luxurious resort is situated on the edge of Long Beach’s beautiful Rainbow Harbor. In the heart of long beach, it is only a few steps from the beach, as well as restaurants and shops. The Queen Mary is only about 1.5 km and Disneyland approximately 35 km away.

Facilities:
Renovated in 2004, the hotel comprises 17 floors with a total of 522 rooms. Facilities include a lobby with a 24-hour reception desk, a currency exchange counter, a newspaper stand, and a conference room. Within the hotel there is also Tides restaurant overlooking Rainbow Lagoon, Perks Coffee Pantry, and a bar. Room and laundry services (charges apply) and a car park round off the offerings.

The recently renovated rooms have a Californian coastal décor and feature an en suite bathroom, a hairdryer, a fridge, a coffee machine, an iron and ironing board, and a double or king-size bed.
