it could very well be your ACL. The big problem to worry about now is not tearing the other 3 major ligiments in that knee. I tore my acl, took it easy for a while then a few months later tore it some more just by taking my shoe off at an akward angle. You may keep experiencing this random sharp pain in the knee until the ligiment is completely torn. the good news is an acl replacement is a lot less painful now and recovery time is a lot less now than it was when i had it done.
References :
i suggest an eliptical machine for getting back in shape, takes the stress off of your supporting tissue and is low impact.
meninscus damage really only occurs from high impact. i.e. jumping out of a second story window and landing on your feet. its your knees air bags so to speak. it can get injured by a non high impact source, but it takes a lot to tear one of those. which direction did your knee go swinging out? any direction can injure the ACL, but depend ing on the direction it could be another ligament or 2.
really you need a doctor to do a few special tests on you to determine whats what. you can be pretty sure that it is not a complete tear atleast, if it was you would not be able to move your knee.
References :
Are you getting an MRI of your knee? That would give the definite answer.

Nothing prevents you from eating less in the meantime.
