why does Sac State get no love among the CSU’s?

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

I’m a Sac City/CRC student and I will be transferring to Sac State in the Fall. I like it there a lot, and it’s a beautiful campus which a good amount of extracurricular activities, but it seems to have that commuter school stereotype where most students come to class and leave without caring about sports, school spirit, extracurriculars, etc. As much as I KNOW I’m gonna enjoy myself, in the back of my mind I wish that most of my fellow CA students had a desire to go there like they do to the other CSUs (Cal Poly SLO, SDSU, SJSU, Sonoma, Chico, Long Beach, etc.)

I will be going to Sac State for the graphic design program, which is one of the most prestigious in Nor Cal. I turned down UC Davis for this because of the cost, and because they are cutting funds/classes for their design program, and I have heard that some of the design students over there attempt to transfer over to Sac State’s graphic design program. Are there also any other programs that Sac State is well known for?

I’m just wondering exactly WHY Sac State is really underrated and doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. It’s WAY better than other CSUs (I won’t mention which ones though). And with the new fitness center in the Fall (http://www.thewell.csus.edu/), it should be able to attract more prospective students and athletes and promote better school spirit and less apathy.

I wanna know people’s thoughts…if you are rude and have nothing nice or intelligent to say, don’t say it. Thanks.

I guess it is a matter of perspective. How much do you know about CSU LA, Dominguez Hills, Stanislaus, Fullerton, Northridge or Cal Poly Pomona? I don’t think they are high on the glamor scale for Cal state colleges either. Those are mostly commuter schools too. Can you get just as good an education there as you would at SLO or SJSU? You bet. Are there fewer distractions and temptations as there are at places such as Chico State or SDSU? Absolutely.

You get what you can from your particular college experience by making the most of it. Yes, there is more of a "college atmosphere" at places like UC Berkley and UCLA, but how often will you be able to talk to your teacher one on one? A big college professor is often much more interested in doing research, writing the next textbook or getting the next NSF grant than (s)he is in ensuring that you comprehend the course material.

Do your best, get the most out of whatever is offered and remember that your education is top priority.

Good luck

Is this a good exercise routine?

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

Hi there! So I was wondering if there were any physical fitness experts in Yahoo! Answers tonight…? If not, any input is appreciated :) [nothing rude, please!]

Well this is pretty much all I have right now. I planned it according to what’s in the kitchen:

1. Breakfast: Oatmeal w/ Milk (The powdered kind. It doesn’t contain fat. Don’t worry, it’s WAY better than it sounds :D ) or Cheerios (1 cup)
2. Morning walk around the block. It usually takes me 20 minutes.
3. School til 2pm
4. Lunch: Not sure about that yet, but I almost always have chicken, beans, & a tortilla, (Lol. Yes, I’m Mexican-American. And I enjoy grains.) and there’s mixed salad in the fridge. We’re out of fruit, but I’ll see if we can go to the store soon. I also take Women’s 1 a Day multivitamin.
5. 15 minute walk/jog at 7:30 when the sun goes down.
6. Dinner: Any suggestions? I’m thinking soup since I eat around 8 or 9.

Other details: I’m definitely going to start aiming for 8 glasses of water a day, and a little more milk. My problem is when I’m snacking on poptarts and chips, but I figure if I don’t take money with me to school, then there’s no way to buy snacks right? I DO need something to tide me over b/w breakfast and lunch though. And again before my walk/jog. Oh, and I checked the fridge, we have eggs (and an endless supply of chicken).

Now a little about me: I’m 18, measure 4′ 10”, weigh 117 lbs, like long walks on the beach… just kidding. But the rest is true. I don’t want to lose weight, just belly fat. Maybe even get a little definition in my waist?

I know it won’t happen overnight. It takes 6-8 weeks for a noticeable change to occur, but can you blame me for wishing?

Now, any thoughts? Things to change? Suggestions please! Thanks ^_^

Sorry for all the info!

make the tortilla at lunch a whole wheat one. stay away from white flour altogether. fruits, vegetables, fish, and grilled chicken should be in your diet. no soup for dinner, it has so much sodium in it. try to get 30 minutes of cardio exercise (running, jogging, swimming, biking) in each day or at least 5x a week.

if you exercise 5x a week and eat 1,200-1,500 calories you will lose 2 pounds per week.

My son’s secret life?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

I’m concerned about my son. He’s 17 years old, he’ll be graduating high school this year. He have been taking a college course at community college ever since he was a junior. He also is highly ranked in ROTC and leader for raider team and is one of very few to be on physical fitness for three years. He also is an accomplished varsity wrestler. And have been doing mixed martial art ever since wrestling season was over during his freshman year. He even had done a couple boxing, kickboxing, and grappling matches and always did very well in them.
I’m very proud of everything he did. But what bothers me is, lately I’ve been learning lot of things that really bothers me.
Outside of ROTC and mixed martial arts, he has very few friends. Almost all of them are female friends from college who are rather odd. They all dresses really odd, many have unnatural hair color, and other things. Most of them appear to be in early 20’s. My son hangs out with them way more than anyone else. I tried to not let it get to me at first.
However I start to find blood stain on his shirt, I start to find scars on his body that he’d try to hide if asked about it, and other things.
We also notice he never panic when he saw his own blood, in fact he seems to like the sight of it.
A couple days ago, we installed a software on computer that would allows us to see what our kids are doing on the computer (we’re more worried about our three younger children). To my shock, I found a couple pictures of some of those girls he hang out with drinking blood and playing with blood.
We also found from his online journal that he basically do wrestling and mixed martial arts simply because he get thrills out of it and hurting other people and getting hurt.
He also states some things he have done that we didn’t know of. He talks about sneak into abandoned building, climbing then reppell down a very tall building in our city at night, falling off cliff and crashed through branches when he went on some rock climbing, biking sixty miles to beach and almost died when he got caught in rough wave, pulls some pranks off, getting in fight, and other things.
We also learned that my son have been lying about where he was majority of the time. Often he’d say he’s at library, training late, and other things so he can do all those dangerous things. We also learned on weekend, he’d regularly go out to meet foreigner tourist and hang out with them and play guide for them.
We haven’t told him anything about this since we don’t want him to find out we were spying on him and other kids.
Not long ago, he came and told us he plans on joining the army and wants to go to recruiting office. We thought it’d be ok since he’d probably get accepted in a good university. But now he wants to go in as 11X (infantry/special force) with airborne school as option instead of attending a university that he got accepted into!
I am having very hard time to deal with all of this. I don’t even know if I should approach him about any of those things. I used to think he was a really good kid. But now I feel like there may just be another whole world that we didn’t know of. Is there any possible underlying issue behind this whole thing?

first of all i don’t think any parent should spy on their kids… no matter what… the blood and scars are probably from him self harming… it’s not a suicide thing.. it’s just a way to express pain… the friends that he hangs with.. are probably nice people.. and they were probably drinking red cordial or something like that just for the photos… the only way u are going to find out and get ur son help if he needs it.. is to be honest with him… tell him u spy on him.. tell him u think he needs help.. don’t yell at him.. ask him to explain why… good luck

How can I lose weight?

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

I don’t wanna lose it super fast, I just wanna lose it haha
I’m 5′9" and 175 lbs last I checked
and NONE of that "extra" goes to my boobs or butt, I’m completely flat in both areas

Most of it goes to my thighs/stomach, and I have these weird love handle things that make my hips look messed up.
I also have a very chubby face that I’d like to get rid of.

I wanna lose about 40 lbs, I think that’s a healthy goal.
Btw, this weight IS effecting my health, it’s not muscle at all, none of it is, can’t even do a push up, can’t run very fast or for a very long time..

I want to try to lose the weight by next year
I may be going on a trip to Hawaii, Fiji, Australia and New Zealand
So that’s alot of beaches and hot weather, I wanna look cute in a bikini and shorts and not like a whale LOL

I’m 14 btw, I don’t really wanna go to a gym or anything and be the youngest one there, talk about embarrassing.

ALSOOOO I know this is posted in the wrong section, the diet and fitness section is full of bots and spammers, so I know I wouldn’t get any good answers there

im 14 i go to da gym.
and + ur heaps taller than me.
just diet dnt eat maccas etc.
btw i live in Australia lolz :)

How can I become fit and healthy again without it feeling like a chore?

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

(You can skip the first part and read the last two paragraphs if it’s too long)

I used to be addicted to sweets when I was a child, so much that my two front upper milk teeth were rotten form eating too much sugar, a few years later I had a painful abscess in my gum and had to have teeth removed, my parents did stop giving me sweets eventually encouraged me to be healthy by taking me to swimming lessons and dancing lessons and to eat sensible meals like turkey salad (yum!) even though I would have tantrums, scream the house down, hide a box of ready made icing under my pillow and eat it at night.

At 11 I would ride bikes with my friends for miles to get to the nearest beach and go for a swim (and a tan). That is when I became more conscious of my body and I started to take responsibility of my diet when I was 13 years of age and started to despise unhealthy snacks and fizzy drinks (Im lucky i didn’t end up with diabetes and obese).

When I was 14 I moved away and stopped going to dance classes etc ect, all me and my friends would do for exercise was walk around all day, I felt withdrawn from exercising and would ask my friends if they wanted to go for a jog or to a swimming classes, they didn’t want to, but I figured that as long as I got some sort of daily excersise and fresh air even if it was just walking, that would be fine.

Im quite proud that things turned around for me and I managed to be healthy and fit, but now I have gone back to my unhealthy ways by eating junk and not exercising, I also smoke like a chimney.

I would start again but now eating healthy and exercising feels like a chore, I can’t do it without thinking Im doing it for a reason or that there is a goal at the end of it, my friends are still reluctant to go to the gym with me (they talk about going, getting fit and loosing weight but never get round it) I went to the gym once with my friend and loved it but she must have felt jealous and because she makes excuses about going with me now.

I have done some fitness DVD’s but they get boring after a while and after a few minuets I think what is the point? I don’t want to go out jogging or for a walk because I will feel too self conscious, I have thought about going to the gym on my own but I’m scared of feeling self conscious and getting in a nervous clumsiness state where I fall over or just give up after a few minuets because there is nobody there to compete with and encouraged by.

What do you think I should do?

Stop being lazy. Staying fit IS a chore. But if you think that the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, and thus being healthy, outweigh the benefits of potentially having medical problems in the future than you will do it. If you don’t do it, than you really are harming yourself. Stop smoking.

Does this sound like torn ACL or Meniscus?

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

I was injured very badly about 5 years ago with my knee. I don’t remember how long, but it took forever to heal. I was on serious pain pills. In Canada it can take a year just to see a specialist and by the time it was my turn, I felt I was healed.

Well the other day, in the rain, I was getting a toddler out of my car awkwardly because there was no room between the cars and the same knee went swinging out the same way as the first time.

I didn’t really notice it much at first but by the end of the day my knee/leg was 3x swollen…I mean it was huge! Impossible to bend it. Tons of pain when on it. Very irritable because I was trying to keep doing the norm. Had to use cane to keep weight off as much as possible and since it was a weekend, just stayed off it. Tons of ice and Motrin.

It has had popping sounds, very painful if I am on it or have to get up and down or go up and down stairs.

I went to physiotherapist and she figures it is torn ACL or cartilage but is seeing me in 2 days to see how it is…also recommending my physician send me to surgeon.

I had plans to go on Vacation with friends in July to the beach, and they wanted me to help with child care for little ones…where I am definitely needed to be flexible and up and down and ready to go. They need to know if I am not able to perform, or go on vacation with them. They are now concerned I will even be able to work for good now.

I’m like..how do I know how long it will take to heal?

I’m worried now and wonder if this sounds as serious as it could possibly be?

I am also overweight and was just starting on a fitness routine when this happened…can I eventually exercise enough to get in shape w/o hurting knee?

Thank you for your patience in reading my question.
The main part of the question was….approx how long can this take to heal if I don’t have surgery? Any ideas?

i suggest an eliptical machine for getting back in shape, takes the stress off of your supporting tissue and is low impact.
meninscus damage really only occurs from high impact. i.e. jumping out of a second story window and landing on your feet. its your knees air bags so to speak. it can get injured by a non high impact source, but it takes a lot to tear one of those. which direction did your knee go swinging out? any direction can injure the ACL, but depend ing on the direction it could be another ligament or 2.
really you need a doctor to do a few special tests on you to determine whats what. you can be pretty sure that it is not a complete tear atleast, if it was you would not be able to move your knee.

can someone help design me an exercise plan? i’ve lost all my fitness due to hospitalization?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

about 6 months ago, i was put into hospital twice and underwent a lot of therpay, so i was unable to exercise for a long time. i used to be one of the fittest people i know, now i cant even run for longer than five minutes! its really annoying me! please help design me a days worth of exercising to get fitter. please, please, please!!!!!!!!

ps: i am unable to join a join at the moment, i do have a treadmill and trampoline but prefer exercising outdoors. (beach, park, etc)

hey ladycadillac howsit!

my mum had something similar not long ago. 3 months in hospital and she lost a massive amount of muscle mass and had to go to rehab (no no no) to get her walking again. Maybe this is too basic for ya but it will prob help :)

The rehab place got her doing repetetive stuff. stairs were on the list and they helped her big time – muscular and cardio. Doing quad lifts and basic bicep and tricep exercises.

squats were a bit too hard for her but maybe be good for you. press ups against a wall too – you can move your legs beck and forward depending on how hard you want to go.

hope that helps :)

Found wife’s hidden vacation video. Do I need to ask?

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

REPOSTING…Asked this very late one night. Thought I would see what the morning group has to add. Thanks.

We visited my wife’s college friend last month. She married and moved to another country a few years ago and they wanted to get together again. We stayed at their place and one day the friend stole my wife for a day so they could catch up. They were gone all day and most of the night. She said they went shopping and got makeovers, which was obvious. She was in a club kind of dress she would never wear at home…more makeup…and a spiky hairstyle. She looked great, but not what I’m used to. I asked about her day but she didn’t want to talk about it. She laughed and said don’t worry, she didn’t screw anybody. I didn’t think much about it again until yesterday. I was looking for a movie in her stash of chick flicks and fitness videos when I found one that was unmarked. It was two hours of her day and night out. They had been recording practically every minute they were together, so it’s not too surprising they wanted to record that too. I won’t describe everything in detail, but it started with the makeover and shopping. There was a visit to a nude beach. More shopping. A strip club where they took part in an amateur competition, including lap dances. More shopping…for the club dresses this time. Then finally a dance club. They didn’t record everything, but there was dancing, making out, flashing, and other craziness you would expect in that atmosphere. I feel bad that I found the dvd while I was going through her things because she hates people doing that. Everything is totally normal since we’ve been home, and I wonder if I should tell her what I know and open that can of worms. Sorry for the long question.
I happen to agree with Valerie about the Penthouse letter thing. That’s exactly what it sounds like. And there are plenty of holes in the story because it would be way too long if I got into the whole thing.
KitKat… mid-30s, married 8 years.
